Admission to Southern District Federal Court Florida

Southern District of Florida Local Rules 1. and 2. of The Special Rules Governing the Admission and Practice of Attorneys require the applicant to pass a Core Exam with a minimum score of 80%. The exam consists of at least 40 questions derived from the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedures, Evidence and Jurisdiction/Venue and ten questions from the Southern District of Florida Local Rules. Exams are administered in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach all on the same day and all begin promptly at 2:30 p.m.. Two hours are allowed to complete the exam but you may leave whenever you finish.

If you pass, certificates are mailed approximately eight weeks after the examination date. Exam results will not be given over the telephone. The exam can be taken three times without achieving a passing score. If an attorney is unable to pass the exam on the third attempt, the attorney must wait one full year before reapplying to take the exam. After the third attempt, there is a $175.00 re-application fee.

Your original application package must be received by the Clerk’s Office by close of business on the date of the application deadline. A postmark by the deadline date does not qualify as “received.” (If you choose to hand-deliver your application package rather than mail it, you may do so at the courthouses in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. If hand-delivering, go to the Cashier/Intake to pay the application fee and leave the application package with the Cashier/Intake Clerk who will time-stamp it and forward it to Attorney Admissions.)

The deadlines are strictly enforced due to time and space constraints. Before submitting your application, please make sure you have included the following:

? An original Certificate of Good Standing.

? For attorneys admitted to the Florida Bar within 30 days of the registration deadline date, you may submit an Oath of Admission in lieu of a Certificate of Good Standing.

Your Certificate of Good Standing may be from the Florida Bar or the Supreme Court of Florida and must be original. The Certificate of Good Standing must be dated within 90 days of the date of the exam for which you are registering and, if from the Florida Bar, must have a raised seal. A copy or fax of a Certificate of Good Standing is not acceptable nor is a certificate from another district court.

? An application fee of $175.00. Checks must be payable to “Clerk, United States Court.”

Your application will be returned without processing if the requested information is not provided and/or if it does not include both the certificate of good standing (or oath of admission) and the application fee as described above.

You will receive written confirmation of the exam date and location for which you are scheduled two weeks after the application deadline. Information on the status of your application will not be provided before your written confirmation is sent.
